The Kurdistan Regional Government’s Meteorology and Weather Forecasting Authority has announced that a wave of rain and snow will affect the entire region, accompanied by a significant drop in temperatures. The cold conditions are expected to intensify on Friday evening, with heavy snowfall in high-altitude areas.
According to the authority, the cold air mass will begin affecting the region on the evening of Friday, the 9th of the month, starting in Duhok province, Zakho district, and surrounding mountainous areas, before spreading to Erbil province and Soran district. The impact is expected to peak late Friday night, particularly in areas above 1,200 meters, and will later include Sulaymaniyah and Halabja provinces, as well as Raperin district. By Saturday morning, the wave will reach Garmiyan district with lesser intensity.
Expected rainfall amounts:
Duhok & Zakho: 15 mm
Erbil & Soran: 10 mm
Sulaymaniyah: 8 mm
Halabja & Raperin: 7 mm
Garmiyan: 5 mm
Expected snow accumulation in mountainous areas:
Kani Masi: 30–40 cm
Amadiya: 20–35 cm
Haj Omran: 15–25 cm
Banjawin: 15–20 cm
Mount Kork & Soran: 10–20 cm
Qala Diza: 5–10 cm
The authority, part of the Kurdistan Ministry of Transport and Communications, urged residents to exercise caution in rugged mountainous areas due to heavy snowfall and low temperatures.
