Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said Sunday that he urges Trump to treat all countries equally after the United States imposed a 15 percent tariff on imports. His remarks came during a press conference in New Delhi at the end of his visit to India. Lula stressed that Brazil does not want a new Cold War and opposes interference in any country, calling for balanced treatment in global trade.

Lula calls for equality in global trade

The US Supreme Court ruled by six to three that the 1977 law used by Trump to impose sudden tariffs does not authorize the president to implement such measures. Despite the ruling, Trump announced a new 15 percent tariff on imports. Lula said he avoids commenting on judicial decisions in other countries, but added that he hopes relations with Washington will return to normal soon.

Upcoming Lula Trump meeting

Lula, now 80, is preparing to visit Washington next month for talks with Trump. He expressed confidence that dialogue will help restore normal relations, emphasizing Brazil’s focus on peace, job creation, and improving living conditions.

Tensions and gradual improvement in US Brazil ties

Recent months saw tensions between the two governments after Trump reacted strongly to the trial and conviction of Jair Bolsonaro, his political ally. Trump imposed sanctions on several Brazilian officials as a response. Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years for involvement in a failed coup attempt following the 2022 election loss to Lula.

Tariff exemptions ease pressure

Despite strains, both sides have taken steps toward easing tensions. The US administration exempted key Brazilian exports from a previous 40 percent tariff imposed last year. Lula said the world needs peace, not more turbulence.

Lula in India for cooperation agreements

Lula arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday to attend a summit on artificial intelligence and hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India and Brazil signed agreements to expand cooperation on critical minerals, rare earths, and several other sectors. Lula said he has strong affinity with Modi and values the partnership between the two countries.

Next stop South Korea

Later Sunday, Lula will travel to South Korea for meetings with President Lee Jae Myung and to participate in a business forum aimed at increasing cooperation in trade and investment.

Conclusion:

Lula’s call to Trump highlights the need for balanced international relations and fair trade practices as Brazil works to stabilize ties with the United States and strengthen partnerships across Asia.
