The Iraq national team continues its intensive preparations in West Virginia ahead of its opening match in World Cup 2026 against Norway.

With the tournament set to begin this week, players and coaching staff have maintained high morale and strong focus as they gear up for the highly anticipated encounter.

High Spirits and Tactical Focus

Training sessions have included full participation from all squad members, who displayed determination and optimism ahead of their World Cup debut.

Head coach Graham Arnold has concentrated on refining tactical and technical aspects of the team’s game plan. Recent sessions have been characterized by increasing intensity and disciplined execution.

The coaching staff aims to ensure that the team enters the opening fixture fully prepared to compete against strong opponents.

A Challenging Group

Iraq is placed in a competitive group alongside France, Norway, and Senegal, making every point crucial in the race for qualification to the next round.

The Iraqi sporting community hopes for a respectable performance and a positive start that would strengthen the team’s chances in one of the tournament’s most demanding groups.

Referee Appointment Confirmed

FIFA announced that Gabonese referee Pierre Atcho will officiate Iraq’s opening match against Norway in the first round of group-stage matches.

The appointment adds to the anticipation surrounding the fixture, which is scheduled to take place early Wednesday morning.

Ambition Beyond Participation

Sabah Qasim, a member of the Iraqi Football Association, stated that Iraq’s objective in World Cup 2026 goes beyond mere participation.

He said the coaching staff and players are targeting a historic achievement, despite the difficulty of the group.

Preparations for the tournament began more than two months ago through continuous training camps and friendly matches.

According to Qasim, the team played three important friendly matches during the preparation phase, helping the coaching staff assess strengths and weaknesses before finalizing tactical plans.

Logistical Challenges

Qasim also noted that the delegation currently lacks an accompanying photographer due to visa delays.

The association has been coordinating with the US embassy to secure entry for a replacement photographer, but procedures were delayed due to security conditions and temporary embassy closures.

Conclusion:

The Iraq national team enters World Cup 2026 with elevated morale and ambitious goals. As preparations intensify ahead of the Norway clash, the squad aims to deliver a strong performance that reflects the aspirations of Iraqi football fans worldwide.
