French president says peace 'possible' for Israel, Gaza with hostage release

Under a ceasefire deal pushed for by US President Donald Trump, Hamas was to release the 47 remaining hostages -- living and dead -- in exchange for 250 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails, along with 1,700 Gazans detained since the latest conflict broke out in October 2023. Buses with the International Red Cross emblem on them move towards the eastern Gaza Strip from Khan Yunis in southern Gaza on October 13, 2025, ahead of the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas since the October 7 attacks two years ago.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday hailed the release by Hamas of Israeli hostages still alive in the Gaza strip, saying with their release “peace becomes possible for Israel, for Gaza, and for the region”.

“I share the joy of the families and of the Israeli people as seven hostages have just been handed over to the Red Cross,” Macron wrote on X after arriving in Egypt for a summit on Gaza.

In total, 20 living hostages are set to be returned to Israel on Monday morning.
