Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood Calls US Terrorist Label 'Detached from Reality'

An Egyptian protester waves his national flag as thousands celebrate on July 1, 2013 in Cairo's landmark Tahrir square after Egypt's armed forces gave President Mohamed Morsi 48 hours to meet the demands of the people or it would intervene with a roadmap. The statement comes a day after millions took to the street demanding that Morsi resigns. An official from Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood said the powerful movement was "studying" the army's statement. The Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood issued a statement on Tuesday condemning the United States’ decision to designate the organization as a terrorist group.

In its official response, the group asserted that the designation is “detached from reality and unsupported by evidence.” The statement emphasized that the Muslim Brotherhood rejects violence and does not constitute a threat to the United States.

The announcement from Washington has been met with a firm denial from the organization, which has long been a significant political and social force in Egypt and the wider region.
