Egypt Welcomes US Terrorist Designation of Muslim Brotherhood

A municipal worker hoists flags of various countries near Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport ahead of the arrival of world leaders in Sharm el-Sheikh on October 11, 2025. US President Donald Trump confirmed that he would meet "a lot of leaders" in Egypt on October 13, to discuss the future of devastated Gaza, adding that he was confident the ceasefire would lead to wider peace in the Middle East.

The Egyptian government on Tuesday welcomed the United States’ decision to designate branches of the Muslim Brotherhood as terrorist organizations, describing the move as a “pivotal step” against extremism.

In an official statement, the Egyptian foreign ministry said the decision “reflects the danger of this group and its extremist ideology and the direct threat it poses to regional and international security and stability.”

The ministry added that the U.S. designation aligns with Egypt’s “longstanding position” and its own classification of the group as a terrorist organization, which it states is “based on violence, extremism and incitement.”
