Europe is facing a renewed wildfire emergency after authorities in southern Germany reported that a major forest fire had spread beyond control due to strong winds and difficult terrain. At the same time, Greece declared its highest wildfire alert as advancing flames moved closer to Athens, highlighting the growing impact of extreme weather across the continent.

Germany Battles an Uncontrolled Forest Fire

A large wildfire broke out near Freudenberg in Bavaria, southern Germany, prompting the deployment of around 330 emergency responders to contain the blaze.

Local authorities said powerful winds fueled the fire’s rapid spread, while rugged terrain and thunderstorms complicated firefighting efforts, forcing many crews to battle the flames on foot.

Residents Urged to Take Precautions

Officials advised residents to stay away from the affected area, keep windows and doors closed, switch off ventilation and air-conditioning systems, and monitor local emergency broadcasts as thick smoke continued to spread.

Greece Raises Red Alert as Fires Approach Athens

Meanwhile, Greece elevated its wildfire warning to the highest (red) alert level across the Greater Athens region as strong winds pushed multiple wildfires closer to the capital.

The most dangerous blaze was burning about 60 kilometers northwest of Athens, with thick smoke visible from the city as emergency services intensified efforts to contain the fire.

Evacuations and Emergency Response

Authorities evacuated several nearby villages as a precaution and rescued 12 people from a beach in Porto Germeno. Initial reports also indicated that at least 10 homes had been destroyed.

Firefighting operations involved approximately 325 firefighters and volunteers, supported by 92 fire engines, 18 firefighting aircraft, and seven helicopters, while heightened alert levels were extended to other regions of the country.

A Growing Wildfire Threat Across Europe

The crisis extends beyond Germany and Greece, with countries including France, Spain, Italy, and Türkiye also battling widespread wildfires amid persistent heatwaves and dry weather.

Climate experts warn that rising temperatures, prolonged drought, and stronger winds are increasing both the frequency and intensity of wildfires across Europe, making containment efforts increasingly difficult.

Emergency Services Under Pressure

Firefighting agencies across Europe continue to face mounting pressure as multiple large-scale fires burn simultaneously, prompting governments to strengthen emergency preparedness and preventive measures to protect communities and critical infrastructure.

Conclusion

The developments in Germany and Greece underscore the growing severity of Europe’s wildfire season. With extreme heat, strong winds, and dry conditions fueling rapidly spreading fires, authorities are racing to contain the blazes and minimize damage. As wildfires continue to affect several European countries, concerns are mounting that the crisis could worsen in the coming days.
