Tunisia were eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a heavy 4-0 defeat to Japan in their second Group F match, played in Monterrey on Sunday. The result marked Tunisia’s second consecutive loss, leaving them bottom of the group with no points.

The match also marked the debut of new head coach Herve Renard, whose first outing ended in disappointment following Tunisia’s earlier 5-1 loss to Sweden.

Early Blow Sets the Tone

Tunisia endured a disastrous start, conceding in just the fourth minute. A quick Japanese move, initiated by goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, reached Daichi Kamada via Kaito Nakamura, who calmly finished to give Japan an early lead.

The goal was the fastest ever conceded by Tunisia in their World Cup history, immediately putting the team under pressure.

Japan continued their dominance and doubled their lead in the 31st minute through Ayase Ueda, who scored with a powerful low shot from outside the penalty area.

Japanese Control and Tunisian Struggles

Japan maintained control in the second half, dominating possession and midfield play, while Tunisia struggled to create meaningful attacking chances.

Despite tactical changes by Renard, including introducing Ismael Gharbi and Mohamed Amine Ben Hamida, Tunisia failed to break down Japan’s organized defense.

Goals Seal the Victory

– 3rd goal: Junya Ito (69’) after a one-on-one chance

– 4th goal: Ayase Ueda (83’) with a header from a cross

The fourth goal confirmed Japan’s superiority, with Tunisia continuing to suffer from defensive errors.

Group F Standings

With the victory, Japan moved to four points, sharing the top spot in Group F with the Netherlands on goal difference. Sweden sit on three points.

Tunisia remain at the bottom of the group with zero points after two defeats, confirming their elimination from the tournament.

Difficult Start for Renard

The match marked the first appearance of French coach Herve Renard, who replaced Sabri Lamouchi following Tunisia’s heavy defeat to Sweden.

Renard made four changes to the starting lineup, but the team showed little improvement, particularly in defense and attacking organization.

Historic Achievement for Japan

Japan’s four-goal performance marks the first time an Asian team has scored four goals in a single World Cup match.

The result highlights the continued development of Japanese football on the global stage.

Conclusion

Tunisia’s exit from the 2026 World Cup comes after a disappointing campaign marked by defensive weaknesses and lack of attacking effectiveness. Japan, meanwhile, strengthened their position as a serious contender for the top spot in Group F.

The result raises questions about Tunisia’s readiness and ability to compete at the highest level, especially at the start of a new coaching era under Renard.
