Spanish emergency services have recovered the body of a sixth person following the collapse of a wooden footbridge at El Bocal Beach near Santander on Tuesday, March 3. The incident, which claimed the lives of five individuals initially and sent one person to hospital with hypothermia, has left local authorities and families in deep distress.

Santander’s Mayor Gema Igual described the tragedy as “unimaginable” for families and the community, emphasizing the “cruel” ordeal residents have endured during the ongoing search for a female victim still missing. Rescue operations continue with helicopters, boats, drones, and police divers actively searching the waters around the collapse site.

What Happened at El Bocal Beach

The wooden footbridge, which connected two clifftop sections of a coastal walking path at El Bocal Beach on Santander’s outskirts, gave way around 4:30 PM local time on Tuesday. A group of seven people were traversing the route, which involved multiple footbridge crossings along the scenic coastal area.

When the structure collapsed, victims fell into the sea and onto rocks below. All affected individuals have been described as young to middle-aged women, though their nationalities remain unconfirmed at this time.

Rescue and Recovery Efforts

Immediate response from Spanish authorities mobilized a comprehensive search operation involving:

Helicopters and air surveillance
Coastal guard and police divers
Firefighters and emergency personnel
Local government coordination

One survivor was hospitalized with hypothermia after rescue. However, one woman remains unaccounted for, prompting authorities to expand search operations in the surrounding waters and rocky coastline.

Timeline of Fatalities

Initial reports indicated four deaths on Tuesday evening. The death toll rose to five overnight as one hospitalized victim succumbed to injuries in an intensive care unit. Thursday’s recovery brought the confirmed total to six victims.

Impact on the Community

Mayor Gema Igual visited the collapse site and spoke with rescue personnel and grieving families. Her statement reflected the profound impact on Santander’s residents: “They had come to enjoy the area’s natural environment and suffered this accident.”

The mayor emphasized that this tragedy affects not only the families directly involved but also the broader community that depended on and appreciated the coastal walking routes that are central to the region’s natural heritage and tourism.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the footbridge collapse or whether safety concerns had been previously reported about the structure. The wooden construction’s failure will likely prompt a comprehensive review of coastal path infrastructure safety standards across northern Spain.

Conclusion:

As search and rescue operations continue for the missing person, Santander grieves the loss of six individuals in what remains one of Spain’s most devastating recent infrastructure accidents. The incident underscores critical questions about coastal safety management and maintenance protocols.
