One Killed in Israeli Strikes on South Lebanon as Military Issues New Evacuation Warnings

Lebanese army soldiers secure the site of a drone attack that targeted a vehicle on the road of the southern Lebanese village of Ansarieyh on February 2, 2026. Despite a November 2024 truce that sought to end more than a year of hostilities including two months of all-out war between Israel and the Iran-backed group, Israel has kept up regular strikes on Lebanon and has maintained troops in five areas it deems strategic.

One person was killed, and several others were wounded in Israeli strikes across southern Lebanon on Sunday, according to the Lebanese health ministry. The attacks were followed by new evacuation warnings issued by the Israeli military on Monday for residents in two southern villages.

On Sunday, an Israeli strike in the village of Ebba, located in the Nabatiyeh district, targeted a vehicle and killed its driver. Lebanon’s health ministry confirmed the fatality and stated that six others were wounded, including two children. The state-run National News Agency reported a boy was injured when his family’s car, which was passing during the attack, crashed.

The Israeli military acknowledged the strike near Ebba, stating it targeted a Hezbollah operative. In a separate statement on Monday, the Israeli military confirmed that Ali al-Hadi Mustafa al-Haqqani, described as a senior Hezbollah air defence officer, was killed in a strike in southern Lebanon on Sunday.

Another Israeli strike on Sunday hit the village of Qanarit in the Sidon district, wounding one person. The National News Agency reported the strike targeted a bulldozer that was clearing rubble from a previous Israeli attack. The Israeli army stated it struck “several Hezbollah engineering vehicles,” claiming they were being used to reestablish “terror infrastructure sites.”

Tensions in the region were further heightened when the Israeli military dropped leaflets over the southern town of Bint Jbeil, warning residents that Hezbollah was using a local hospital. Lebanon’s health ministry condemned the leaflets as “a serious attack and a flagrant violation of international laws.” The targeted Salah Ghandour hospital, which is run by the Hezbollah-affiliated Islamic Health Committee, rejected the claims as “flimsy pretexts with no basis in truth.”

On Monday, the Israeli military’s Arabic-language spokesman issued evacuation warnings for specific buildings in the villages of Kfar Tibnit and Ain Qana. He stated that the army would soon “strike military infrastructure belonging to the Hezbollah terrorist organisation” in response to what it called prohibited attempts to rebuild its activities in the area.

These events occur despite a November 2024 truce intended to halt hostilities. Since the ceasefire, Israeli fire has killed more than 360 people in Lebanon, according to a tally of Lebanese health ministry reports.

Tensions remain high in South Lebanon following a series of Israeli military actions. Recent events include targeted strikes that resulted in casualties and new evacuation orders for residents in several villages, signaling potential for further escalation. The situation in South Lebanon continues to be a focal point of regional conflict, impacting civilians and infrastructure.

These developments challenge the stability established by the November 2024 ceasefire. The ongoing Israeli strikes in South Lebanon, which Israel claims are aimed at Hezbollah infrastructure, have drawn condemnation from Lebanese officials. The international community continues to monitor the volatile border region, where the risk of renewed, wider conflict persists.
