The Kurdistan Freedom Party, an Iranian Kurdish opposition group based in Iraq, has accused Iran of carrying out a deadly drone and missile attack on its headquarters early Wednesday. The strike reportedly killed one party member and wounded two others.
In a statement, the party alleged that “the occupying Iranian state” was responsible for targeting one of its military bases. An official from the group told AFP they believe the strike was a direct response to their “calls for people in Iran to protest against the regime” and their maintenance of an “organised and trained military force.”
The Kurdistan Freedom Party, established in Iran in 1991, is one of several Iranian Kurdish opposition factions that have maintained a presence in Iraq since the 1980s. Iran designates these groups as “terrorist” and separatist organizations, frequently accusing them of launching attacks against its forces.
This incident follows previous Iranian strikes on opposition groups in Iraqi Kurdistan, notably in 2022 during the widespread protests that followed the death of Mahsa Amini, an Iranian Kurdish woman, in police custody.
The party concluded its statement by addressing the Iranian government, asserting that the “struggle for freedom and independence will only become more resolute and enduring.”
