With fighters' withdrawal from Turkey, PKK seeking to protect peace: senior militant to AFP

Senior Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militant, Sabri Ok (C), speaks to journalists during a ceremony in the Qandil area of northern Iraq, where the militant group announced its complete withdrawal of forces from Turkey, on October 26, 2025. The Kurdish militant PKK said on October 26 it was withdrawing all its forces from Turkey to northern Iraq, urging Ankara to take legal steps to protect the peace process. The PKK formally renounced its armed struggle against Turkey in May, drawing a line under four decades of violence that has claimed some 50,000 lives.

The Kurdish militant PKK’s withdrawal of its fighters from Turkish soil is aimed at protecting the peace process with Turkey from “provocations”, one of the group’s leaders told AFP.

“There are those who want to obstruct this process.. The step we are taking now is to prevent such provocative approaches otherwise they could harm the process,” Devrim Palu told AFP in an interview in northern Iraq after the PKK said it was withdrawing all its fighters from Turkey.
