The Ministry of Water Resources announced on Monday the launch of a large-scale campaign to clean the Euphrates River in Dhi Qar province from water hyacinth.
In a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the ministry said that “the maintenance departments of irrigation and drainage projects in Dhi Qar, along with the Water Resources Directorate, have started an extensive campaign to remove water hyacinth in Nasiriyah, particularly near the Al-Zaytoun Bridge and the express bridge, in order to limit the spread of this plant, which consumes large quantities of water and obstructs its flow.”
The statement added that “the work, which continues until the early morning hours, is being carried out in coordination with the local government of Dhi Qar,” noting that “the Irrigation and Drainage Maintenance Department has also taken swift measures to curb the spread of the plant, including installing barriers near the Fahd Bridge in Al-Bathaa district and near the express bridge in Nasiriyah.”
