United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed shock on Sunday following reports of violence and the use of excessive force by Iranian authorities against protesters.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, Guterres called on the Iranian government “to exercise maximum restraint and to refrain from unnecessary or disproportionate use of force.”

The statement highlighted the Secretary-General’s shock “by the reports of violence and excessive use of force by the Iranian authorities against protesters,” directly addressing the actions taken to suppress the demonstrations.
