Trump says Venezuela jets threatening US forces will be 'shot down'

F-35 fighter aircrafts fly over the White House during Polish President Karol Nawrocki's visit in Washington, DC on September 3, 2025. US President Donald Trump is sending 10 F-35 fighter jets to Puerto Rico as part of his war on drug cartels, sources familiar with the matter told AFP on Semptember 5, 2025, as tensions mount with Venezuela over Washington's military build-up in the Caribbean. The planes will join US warships already deployed to the southern Caribbean as Trump steps up pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, whom the United States accuses of leading a drug cartel. President Donald Trump warned Caracas Friday that its jets would be shot down if they threaten US forces, after Washington said two Venezuelan military planes buzzed an American naval vessel.

“If they do put us in a dangerous position, they’ll be shot down,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office when asked what steps he would take if there were further incidents.
