Russian President Vladimir Putin will discuss the Ukraine conflict with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of a regional summit in China on Monday, the Kremlin said.

“Turkey plays an important role in the Ukraine resolution process,” Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters, including AFP, on Friday.

Both leaders will be in China for a meeting of the Beijing-led Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Turkey has hosted three rounds of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine this year that have failed to break the deadlock over how to end the conflict, triggered when Moscow launched its all-out offensive on its pro-European neighbour in February 2022.

Ushakov said it would be the pair’s first meeting this year.

Turkey, which has friendly ties with its two Black Sea neighbours, has backed Ukraine’s territorial integrity and shied away from Western-led sanctions on Russia.
