Pardoned writer Boualem Sansal lands in Berlin

Algerian writer Boualem Sansal poses in Paris on September 4, 2015. Algeria has accepted a German proposal to pardon French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal, the presidency said on November 12, 2025, adding that he was being transferred to Germany for medical treatment after a year in detention.

French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal has arrived in Germany for medical treatment after being pardoned and released from jail in Algeria, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s office said late Wednesday.

Sansal “has landed and is on his way to hospital”, Steinmeier’s spokeswoman Cerstin Gammelin told AFP.
