'Not a step back': Colombia president defiant in response to US sanctions

This combination of pictures created on September 29, 2025 shows Colombia's President Gustavo Petro gesturing during the enactment of the new labor law at the Quinta de Bolivar museum in Bogota on June 25, 2025, and US President Donald Trump delivering remarks to the United Nations General Assembly at the UN headquarters in New York City on September 23, 2025. On September 29, 2025, during a cabinet meeting, Colombia's President Gustavo Petro took the opportunity to lash out at his US counterpart, Donald Trump, accusing him once again of being complicit in the “genocide” in Gaza. “If Mr. Trump continues to be complicit in genocide, as he has been to date, he deserves nothing more than prison, and his army should not obey him,” Petro said at the Council meeting, which was broadcast on public television.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Friday issued a defiant response to news that he and his family were placed on a US sanctions list, a further rupturing of relations between the two allies.

“Not one step back and never on my knees” Petro posted on social media, echoing slogans used by Latin American revolutionaries.
