Macron Warns of "Unprecedented Consequences" if U.S. Seizes Greenland

France's President Emmanuel Macron delivers a press conference upon the signing of the declaration on deploying post-ceasefire force in Ukraine during the Coalition of the Willing summit on security guarantees for Ukraine, at the Elysee Palace in Paris on January 6, 2026. The summit of the group of Ukraine supporters dubbed the "Coalition of the Willing" is the latest of several meetings planned for the new year as diplomatic efforts to end Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II have gained pace in recent weeks.

French President Emmanuel Macron warned on Wednesday that a potential seizure of Greenland from Denmark by the United States would result in “unprecedented” consequences, according to a government spokeswoman.

During a cabinet meeting, Macron stated, “If the sovereignty of a European ally were affected, the cascading consequences would be unprecedented,” as reported by spokeswoman Maud Bregeon.

Bregeon added that the French government is monitoring the situation closely. “France is closely monitoring the situation and will act in full solidarity with Denmark and its sovereignty,” she said.
