Iraq Railways Suspends Train Services Until Thursday

A train is pictured at a train station in the southern Iraqi city of Basra on its way towards the central shrine city of Karbala on October 17, 2019, ahead of the Arbaeen religious festival. Shiite Muslim pilgrims continued to converge to the holy Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala ahead of Arbaeen, which is an observance that peaks on the 40th day after Ashura, commemorating the seventh century killing of the Prophet Mohammed's grandson Imam Hussein. The General Company for Iraqi Railways announced on Monday the suspension of all passenger train services starting today, with operations set to resume on Thursday.

The Ministry of Transport said in a statement reported by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that the decision includes trains operating between Baghdad Central Station and Basra Station in both directions.

The suspension comes due to the official holiday declared across all provinces on Tuesday, November 11, coinciding with the election process.

According to the statement, both northbound and southbound train journeys will be halted from Monday, November 10, 2025, and will resume on Thursday, November 13, 2025.
