Iraq | Finance Ministry Releases Sixth Payment of 500 Billion Dinars to Farmers

A currency exchange agent counts Iraqi Dinars at his company in Iraq's southern city of Basra on December 12, 2023. Oil-rich Iraq is hardly short of dollars: it has foreign currency reserves of more than $100 billion (93 billion euros). But in its fight against a booming currency black market, Baghdad has imposed ever-tighter restrictions on the use of American bucks, which for many could mean a severe cut in earnings. Baghdad – Iraqi News Agency (INA)

The Ministry of Finance announced on Monday the release of the sixth payment, amounting to 500 billion dinars, to settle farmers’ dues for the wheat and rice (shloub) crops for the year 2025.

In a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the ministry said, “Based on the approval of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani and the directives of Finance Minister Taif Sami, the Accounting Department has begun disbursing the sixth installment to pay farmers’ entitlements.”

The ministry added that this step comes as part of the government’s commitment to supporting the agricultural sector, providing the necessary liquidity to stabilize farmers’ financial conditions, and encouraging the continued cultivation of strategic crops.

It noted that the released funds cover duly verified entitlements submitted by the Ministry of Trade and will be disbursed according to established financial procedures to ensure direct and timely delivery to farmers.

The statement concluded that the ministry’s teams are working in coordination with relevant authorities to ensure smooth and prompt disbursement of payments to all eligible beneficiaries.
