EU to restart Gaza-Egypt border monitoring mission Wednesday

Under a ceasefire deal pushed for by US President Donald Trump, Hamas was to release the 47 remaining hostages -- living and dead -- in exchange for 250 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails, along with 1,700 Gazans detained since the latest conflict broke out in October 2023. Israeli military armoured vehicles take position oustide the Ofer military prison located between Ramallah and Beitunia in the occupied West Bank on October 13, 2025, before the release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for hostages held by Hamas in Gaza since the October 7 attacks.

The European Union will Wednesday restart a civilian mission to monitor the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt in support of a ceasefire deal, the bloc’s top diplomat said Monday.

“The EU stands ready to do its part,” Kaja Kallas posted on X after Hamas released a first group of Israeli hostages as part of the US-brokered agreement. “This mission can play an important role in supporting the ceasefire,” she said.
