WHO Warns “Blind Spots” May Mask Scale of Ebola Outbreak in Congo

The Ebola outbreak in Congo may be significantly larger than official figures suggest, according to the World Health Organization, which cited persistent “blind spots” in high-risk areas of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Health authorities have reported 676 confirmed cases and 136 deaths so far, while the outbreak has also spread to neighboring Uganda.

Concerns Over Incomplete Data

Olivier Le Polain, an epidemiologist with WHO, said there are still numerous unclear areas in high-risk zones, making it difficult to accurately assess the scale of the outbreak.

Speaking in Beni, eastern Congo, he stressed the urgent need to strengthen surveillance in affected areas.

He noted that the actual number of infections may exceed current official reports due to limited monitoring and delayed detection in some communities.

Spread to New Health Zones

Congolese authorities announced that the virus has extended to three additional health districts.

The outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which no approved treatment or vaccine is currently available.

Health officials acknowledged that the virus went undetected for several weeks, complicating containment efforts.

Limited Isolation Capacity

One of the major challenges identified by WHO is the shortage of hospital beds dedicated to isolating Ebola patients.

According to officials, only about 250 isolation beds are available across the three most affected provinces.

The combination of limited healthcare infrastructure and high population mobility in eastern Congo has made containment more difficult.

Rising Risks for Children

The United Nations warned that infection rates among children could increase in the coming days.

Many young people in the region suffer from malnutrition and have not received routine vaccinations, making them more vulnerable to severe disease.

UNICEF has deployed more than 1,600 health workers and community coordinators, along with 24 disinfection teams, reaching over 160,000 households.

Officials emphasized that rapid detection, high-quality medical care, contact tracing, and community engagement are critical to controlling the outbreak.

Fears of a Larger Crisis

WHO has not yet issued formal projections regarding the total scale of the outbreak.

However, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have indicated that it could potentially reach levels comparable to the 2014–2016 West Africa epidemic, which resulted in more than 11,000 deaths.

While the current outbreak remains concentrated in eastern Congo, international health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.

Conclusion:

The Ebola outbreak in Congo remains a serious public health concern, with WHO warning that gaps in surveillance may obscure its true scale. As cases spread to new areas and healthcare capacity remains limited, global health agencies are urging intensified monitoring and rapid response to prevent a wider regional crisis.
