World Cup 2026 delivered early drama as South Korea secured a 2-1 comeback victory over the Czech Republic in their opening Group A match.

The game, played at Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, marked a strong start for the Korean side as the tournament’s expanded 48-team edition continues to showcase intense competition.

Balanced First Half Despite Korean Pressure

The first half ended goalless, though South Korea enjoyed more possession and created the better chances.

Captain Son Heung-min came close on two occasions, missing key opportunities that could have given his team the lead before the break.

The Czech Republic remained compact defensively and relied on counterattacks, managing to keep the score level at halftime.

Czech Republic Takes the Lead

The second half brought increased intensity, with the Czech Republic striking first in the 59th minute.

Ladislav Krejčí headed the ball into the net following a long throw-in, giving his side a surprise lead despite South Korea’s overall control of the match.

The goal shifted momentum briefly, forcing the Korean team to push forward aggressively in search of an equalizer.

South Korea Responds and Completes the Comeback

South Korea quickly leveled the score in the 67th minute through Hwang In-beom, who received a pass inside the box and chipped the ball over goalkeeper Matěj Kovář.

In the 77th minute, Czech midfielder Tomáš Souček appeared to restore his team’s lead, but Egyptian referee Amin Omar ruled the goal out after a VAR review confirmed an offside in the buildup.

Capitalizing on the moment, South Korea scored the winner in the 80th minute. Oh Hyeon-gyu converted a precise cross from Hwang In-beom to seal the comeback.

Group A Standings After the Opening Matches

With the victory, South Korea earned their first three points and moved level with Mexico at the top of Group A.

Mexico had earlier defeated South Africa 2-0 in the group’s opening match.

Group A includes:

– Mexico

– South Korea

– Czech Republic

– South Africa

The early results suggest a competitive race for the two qualification spots in the group.

Key Takeaways from the Match

The match highlighted several important factors:

– South Korea’s resilience after conceding first.

– The impact of VAR in crucial moments.

– Strong second-half attacking efficiency from Korea.

– Missed opportunities that proved costly for the Czech Republic.

The victory gives South Korea momentum ahead of their next group-stage fixture.

Conclusion:

World Cup 2026 continues to deliver excitement, with South Korea’s comeback win over the Czech Republic setting the tone for Group A. As the expanded tournament progresses, early results are already shaping a competitive and unpredictable group stage.
