A Russian drone in Romania has triggered a diplomatic escalation after it struck a residential building in the country’s east, injuring two people.
Romanian authorities summoned the Russian ambassador in Bucharest and later announced the expulsion of Russia’s consul general in Constanta.
Moscow, in turn, said it is preparing a response to the measures.
Romania summons Russian ambassador
Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu said the ambassador would be formally informed of the consequences of what she described as an irresponsible act by Russia on bilateral diplomatic relations.
In a post on X, she added that further steps could be taken at the European level, including discussions on sanctions packages.
Earlier, Romania’s Foreign Ministry condemned what it called a serious and irresponsible escalation after a Russian drone struck a building in a city near the Ukrainian border, causing minor injuries to two people.
NATO notified and air defense requested
The ministry said Romania had informed its NATO allies and the alliance’s Secretary‑General about the incident.
It also requested measures to accelerate the transfer of counter‑drone capabilities to Romania, citing growing security concerns along its eastern border.
Expulsion of Russian consul general
Romanian President Nicusor Dan announced that the Russian consul general in the Black Sea city of Constanta had been declared persona non grata.
He confirmed that the Russian consulate general in Constanta would be closed, stating that Russia bears full responsibility for the incident.
Moscow vows response
Russia’s Foreign Ministry said it is preparing retaliatory steps following Romania’s decision to expel its consul general.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Russian state media that the response would not be delayed, describing Western reactions to the drone crash as exaggerated.
Broader implications
The Russian drone in Romania incident carries several implications:
Heightened tensions between Russia and a NATO member state
Potential expansion of European sanctions discussions
Increased emphasis on air defense and counter‑drone systems in Eastern Europe
Conclusion:
The crash of a Russian drone on Romanian territory has escalated into a diplomatic dispute involving ambassadorial summons, consular expulsions and threats of retaliation. As Romania coordinates with NATO allies, the situation underscores the wider regional impact of the conflict linked to the war in Ukraine.
