Kurdish Iranian coalition - التحالف الكردي الإيراني

A member of the Iraqi border forces surveys the area near a concrete wall along the Iraqi-Syrian border, in the town of al-Baghuz in the Al-Qaim district of western Iraq, on January 21, 2026, following recent events in neighbouring Syria. The Iraqi government is focusing on its border security after days of fighting between Syrian government forces who have regained swaths of the Kurdish-controlled territory of northeastern Syria.

Kurdish Iranian coalition challenges Iran amid rising regional tensions

The Kurdish Iranian coalition announced in Iraq’s Kurdistan region has added new political pressure on Tehran at a moment when Iran faces internal unrest and renewed nuclear talks with the United States.
This development comes as multiple exiled Kurdish Iranian parties say their unified front aims to confront Iran’s Islamic system and support nationwide protests that have escalated since late last year.
The announcement coincides with preparations for another round of Iran US negotiations in Geneva, where both sides hope to avert a wider conflict in the region.

Kurdish parties unite in Iraq to oppose Tehran

Five exiled Kurdish Iranian groups operating from the Kurdistan region of Iraq said they formed a joint political alliance called the Coalition of Political Forces in Iran Kurdistan.
The groups include the Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK), the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI), and the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK).

Goals of the new coalition

The coalition stated that its primary objectives are:
• The struggle to overthrow Iran’s Islamic republic.
• Achieving self determination for Kurds inside Iran.

The parties voiced support for anti government demonstrations inside Iran and called for increased coordination between Kurdish factions, civil society groups, and opposition networks across the country.

Kurdistan region authorities respond

The Interior Ministry in Iraq’s Kurdistan region reiterated that no group will be permitted to use Kurdish territory for activities targeting neighboring states.
Exiled Kurdish Iranian groups have long maintained bases in the region and have frequently been targeted by Iranian cross-border strikes, including deadly attacks in 2022 that Tehran said were aimed at militants it accused of inciting unrest after the death of Mahsa Amini in custody.

Iran US nuclear talks resume despite military buildup

Geneva discussions expected Thursday

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said a draft framework for a possible nuclear understanding is being prepared ahead of Thursday’s talks with US envoy Steve Witkoff, according to remarks to CBS News.
Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi confirmed that the Geneva meeting aims to make “a final push” toward an agreement that could prevent further escalation.

Threats and military pressure

The United States has increased its military presence in the Middle East with two aircraft carriers and additional air and missile defense systems.
Washington’s threats of military action have grown as protests in Iran expanded into a nationwide confrontation with authorities. Rights groups say thousands were killed in the crackdown.

Iranian officials warned that any US attack would be met with retaliation against American interests in the region. Araghchi insisted Iran seeks a diplomatic solution but retains the right to defend itself.

Internal Iranian tensions and protests continue

Public fear of conflict

Many Iranians interviewed by AFP expressed deep concern about the possibility of war involving the United States and Israel.
Some foreign governments, including Sweden, Serbia, Poland, and Australia, advised their citizens to leave Iran due to the heightened tensions.

Ongoing protests across universities

Fresh pro and anti government rallies were held at multiple universities in Tehran. Some protesters waved symbols of the pre 1979 monarchy while others chanted slogans against it.
Iran’s leadership continues to face one of its most serious domestic challenges in years, fueled by economic hardship and demands for political change.

Link between protests and Kurdish coalition

Several of the Kurdish Iranian groups participating in the new coalition reiterated on Sunday that their initiative is part of a broader effort to support protests inside Iran.
They argued that coordinated political and field efforts are necessary to confront Tehran’s authorities.
Their statement reaffirmed the alliance’s goals of challenging the Islamic republic and securing Kurdish self determination.

Conclusion:

The formation of a unified Kurdish Iranian coalition in Iraq adds another layer to the political pressure facing Iran, occurring at the same time Tehran prepares for critical nuclear talks with Washington. Regional observers are watching whether these parallel developments intensify internal and external challenges for the Islamic republic.
