Germany Recommends Airlines Avoid Iranian Airspace Amid US Military Warnings

An Airbus A350 of the German airline Lufthansa takes off for Los Angeles at the "Franz-Josef-Strauss" airport in Munich, southern Germany, on June 3, 2020 as Lufthansa resumed its air traffic from Munich to the US. An aircraft of German airline giant Lufthansa flew nonstop to Los Angeles for the first time since March 13, 2020, a day after one flew from Munich to Chicago. Lufthansa said it will undergo "far-reaching" restructuring as it posted a first-quarter net loss of 2.1 billion euros ($2.3 billion) on Wednesday, hammered by the coronavirus pandemic. Germany’s air traffic control authority announced on Thursday a formal recommendation for all aircraft to avoid overflying Iranian airspace, effective immediately and lasting until February 10.

A spokesperson for Germany’s Flight Safety Office stated that the advisory was issued “on the instruction of the transport ministry.”

The recommendation follows recent warnings from the United States concerning potential military action against Iran, prompting increased caution for international aviation in the region.
