Funerals Held in Tehran for Security Personnel Killed in Protests

People walk past a banner depicting Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and late leader Ruhollah Khomeini on Enghelab (Revolution) Square in Terhan on January 14, 2026. Iran on Januray 14 vowed fast-track trials for people arrested over a massive wave of protests, after US President Donald Trump threatened "very strong action" if the Islamic republic goes ahead with hangings. In Tehran, authorities held a funeral ceremony for over 100 members of the security forces and other "martyrs" killed in the demonstrations, which authorities have branded as "riots" while accusing protesters of waging "acts of terror".

A mass funeral ceremony was held in Tehran on Wednesday for more than 100 members of the security forces who were killed during the ongoing wave of protests across Iran, according to state television.

State media broadcast images of thousands of attendees outside Tehran University, waving flags of the Islamic Republic as prayers were conducted for the deceased.

The government identifies the dead as “martyrs” and states they were killed by “rioters.” This official account contrasts sharply with reports from human rights organizations, which estimate that thousands of protesters have likely been killed in the government’s crackdown.
