Russia denounces 'cynical' accusations it tried to sway Moldova vote

Moldovan President Maia Sandu casts her ballot at the Petru Rares Theoretical High School, as she votes in the parliamentary election, in Chisinau on September 28, 2025. Moldovans were voting on September 28, 2025, in parliamentary elections that could see the country neighbouring Ukraine swerve from its pro-European path towards Moscow, with the government and the EU accusing Russia of "deeply interfering". Russia on Monday denied accusations it attempted to interfere in Moldova’s parliamentary elections the day before, after the ruling pro-EU party won a decisive majority.

“The country’s authorities cynically accused Russia, not the European Union, of interfering in Moldova’s political processes, fuelling insinuations about a non-existent ‘Russian threat’,” Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement.
