Baghdad, Iraq
Thirteen people, including women and children, were killed and others were injured in a traffic accident that occurred after midnight on Monday on a main road northeast of Baghdad, according to security and medical sources cited by Agence France-Presse (AFP).
A medical source at the Ministry of Health told AFP, “Thirteen people, including women and children, were killed in a traffic accident northeast of Baghdad.”
A security source in Diyala province confirmed “the death of 13 people and the injury of others in a traffic accident that occurred on the main road between Baghdad and Diyala.”
A source at the Baghdad forensic department confirmed that among the victims were five members of one family, including three children.
Traffic accidents are frequent in Iraq, which suffers from the consequences of decades of wars and conflicts that have led to the deterioration of its infrastructure, especially roads and bridges, in addition to rampant corruption and neglect.
Iraqi authorities often attribute traffic accidents to drivers ignoring speed limits and using mobile phones while driving, as well as to drug and alcohol consumption.
