{"id":5647,"date":"2025-08-06T15:13:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-06T10:13:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.iq\/?p=5647"},"modified":"2025-08-07T13:55:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T08:55:10","slug":"uk-watchdog-bans-zara-ads-over-unhealthily-thin-model-photos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.iq\/en\/uk-watchdog-bans-zara-ads-over-unhealthily-thin-model-photos\/","title":{"rendered":"UK watchdog bans Zara ads over &#8216;unhealthily thin&#8217; model photos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Britain&#8217;s advertising regulator on Wednesday banned two adverts by Spanish clothing group Zara for featuring models that appeared &#8220;unhealthily thin&#8221;, calling the images &#8220;irresponsible&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said it took action after it received a complaint about the ads, which were listed on Zara&#8217;s website in May.<\/p>\n<p>One image showed a model with &#8220;protruding&#8221; collarbones, with her pose and styling making her appear &#8220;very slim&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Another featured a model who looked &#8220;slightly gaunt&#8221; owing to a slicked-back hairstyle and that the lighting and clothing made her appear &#8220;noticeably thin&#8221;, the ASA said.<\/p>\n<p>The watchdog ruled the ads breached social responsibility rules and must not appear again in the same form.<\/p>\n<p>Zara told the ASA that the models were medically certified as healthy, in line with British guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>It also assured that only minor lighting and colouring edits were made on the images.<\/p>\n<p>The ads were removed after the ASA made the company aware of the complaint, Zara said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>It added that Zara &#8220;follow stringent guidelines and controls in the selection and photographing of models&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the ASA banned similar ads from British retailers Next and Marks &#038; Spencer.<\/p>\n<p>ajb\/bcp\/lth<\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 Agence France-Presse<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Britain&#8217;s advertising regulator on Wednesday banned two adverts by Spanish clothing group Zara for featuring models that appeared &#8220;unhealthily thin&#8221;, calling the images &#8220;irresponsible&#8221;.
