The migrant crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta has entered a new phase, expanding beyond a border security issue into a broader European challenge. As Spain called on its European Union partners to honor shared migration commitments, the death toll climbed to 61, while France pledged full support and closer cooperation to help manage the growing crisis.<\/p>\n
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez urged EU member states to respect the bloc’s common treaties after Spain faced criticism over its handling of the migrant influx into Ceuta.<\/p>\n
Writing on X, S\u00e1nchez stressed that while solidarity and compassion are voluntary, compliance with European agreements is not. He called for a stronger and more united Europe rather than one divided over migration policy.<\/p>\n
To support his position, S\u00e1nchez cited Frontex data showing that Spain is not the European Union’s primary entry point for irregular migration. Over the past five years, Spain recorded 234,760 irregular arrivals, compared with 478,600 through Italy’s Central Mediterranean route.<\/p>\n
Not all EU members agreed with Madrid’s position. Finland’s Interior Minister argued that Spain had failed to adequately protect the Schengen Area’s external border, highlighting continuing divisions within Europe over migration management.<\/p>\n
As political tensions intensified, Spanish media reported that the death toll linked to the Ceuta crisis had increased to 61, with security and rescue teams continuing to recover bodies near Tarajal Beach along the border.<\/p>\n
The latest developments follow reports that around 60,000 migrants entered Ceuta from Morocco within just 24 hours, making it one of the largest migration surges the enclave has experienced in recent years.<\/p>\n
Authorities warned that the number of fatalities could increase further as search operations continue, underscoring the severe humanitarian consequences of the unprecedented migration wave.<\/p>\n
In a sign that the crisis has become a broader European issue, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed France’s full solidarity with Spain and offered assistance through the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex).<\/p>\n
Macron praised cooperation with Morocco, noting that more than 40,000 migrants had already returned to Moroccan territory during the same day, while French and Spanish interior ministers continued to coordinate their response.<\/p>\n
The French president also ordered enhanced border monitoring along the French-Spanish frontier when necessary, including the deployment of additional mobile security units, aircraft, and drones.<\/p>\n
He argued that the long-term solution lies in implementing the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, strengthening the European Union’s external borders, and accelerating the return of irregular migrants.<\/p>\n
