Southwest France wildfires continue to spread across the Gironde region, where French authorities have deployed 2,500 firefighters and 1,500 soldiers to fight the flames. The fires have burned about 42,000 hectares and forced more than 220,000 people to leave their homes since the blaze began.<\/p>\n
Fire crews are facing extremely difficult conditions as a prolonged heatwave and severe drought have accelerated the spread of the fires and made containment more challenging.<\/p>\n
French Interior Minister Laurent Nu\u00f1ez said in a post on X that the situation remains \u201cvery dangerous and unfavorable,\u201d especially in Gironde.<\/p>\n
He said the fire has become \u201cvery violent and unpredictable\u201d after generating its own winds and moving erratically toward urban areas near Bordeaux.<\/p>\n
Local authorities said the blaze has spread through areas around the Arcachon basin and is now threatening the outskirts of Bordeaux, raising fears of further evacuations.<\/p>\n
The emergency response in Gironde includes:<\/p>\n
– 2,500 firefighters<\/p>\n
– A Swiss firefighting unit<\/p>\n
– 1,500 soldiers<\/p>\n
In the neighboring Landes region, about 550 firefighters are also taking part in the response.<\/p>\n
For the first time, authorities have also used a military A400M transport aircraft to assist firefighting operations.<\/p>\n
Authorities said more than 220,000 people have been evacuated since the fires began, making it one of the largest civilian evacuation operations in France outside wartime.<\/p>\n
Additional evacuations were ordered in several towns near Bordeaux, including Cestas, while shelters continue to house thousands of displaced residents.<\/p>\n
Authorities urged residents to:<\/p>\n
– Follow official instructions<\/p>\n
– Avoid affected areas<\/p>\n
– Allow emergency crews to work without obstruction<\/p>\n
The fires have been fueled by extremely dry vegetation and soaring temperatures across Europe during June and July, making forests easier to ignite and fire lines harder to contain.<\/p>\n
Officials warn that shifting weather conditions could make firefighting even more difficult in the hours ahead.<\/p>\n
