Iraqi security authorities are escalating their campaign against drug trafficking through an aggressive security strategy that combines intelligence-led operations, cross-border coordination, and targeted raids. The latest efforts include major judicial actions alongside the arrest of suspected drug traffickers in Baghdad and Basra.<\/p>\n
The General Directorate of Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Affairs announced that it has shifted from a containment approach to direct confrontation with drug trafficking networks, conducting preemptive operations both inside Iraq and beyond its borders based on precise intelligence.<\/p>\n
According to the directorate, 17 cross-border operations have been carried out this year, bringing the total to 67 international operations over the past three years. Authorities have also expanded international cooperation by establishing additional communication channels with foreign security partners.<\/p>\n
The directorate reported a significant increase in judicial rulings against major drug traffickers, including approximately 400 death sentences and 1,500 life imprisonment sentences. Authorities also seized nearly two metric tons of narcotics this year and dismantled several domestic and international trafficking networks.<\/p>\n
As part of Iraq’s ongoing anti-drug operations, the National Security Service announced two intelligence-based security raids in Baghdad and Basra, conducted after obtaining judicial authorization.<\/p>\n
The operations resulted in the arrest of nine suspects involved in drug trafficking, while security forces seized one kilogram of narcotics, approximately 1,000 narcotic pills, and a firearm.<\/p>\n
The latest raids demonstrate continued coordination among Iraq’s security agencies in targeting organized drug trafficking networks through intelligence gathering, rapid response operations, and judicial cooperation.<\/p>\n
The government’s latest measures reflect a broader strategy to dismantle drug trafficking networks through proactive security operations, stronger international cooperation, and stricter judicial enforcement, while enhancing national efforts to protect communities from narcotics-related crimes.<\/p>\n
