The European Union and Italy have reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Lebanon as preparations begin for the period following the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Both emphasized continued assistance for Lebanon’s security institutions and efforts to preserve regional stability through new security arrangements.<\/p>\n
The European Union welcomed the framework agreement signed between Lebanon and Israel, describing it as an important step toward de-escalation, lasting peace, and the restoration of Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.<\/p>\n
The bloc reaffirmed its support for implementing the agreement and stressed the importance of fully enforcing UN Security Council Resolution 1701. It also expressed its readiness to strengthen support for the Lebanese Armed Forces and Internal Security Forces, including the possibility of contributing to a future European mission during the post-UNIFIL phase.<\/p>\n
The EU highlighted its \u20ac100 million assistance package for the Lebanese Armed Forces, aimed at reinforcing state authority, national sovereignty, and security while ensuring continued international engagement in maintaining stability.<\/p>\n
Complementing the broader European position, Italy’s Joint Operations Command announced that its 2026 international deployment plan includes continued military engagement in Lebanon as part of its global security commitments.<\/p>\n
Commander General Giovanni Maria Iannucci said UNIFIL’s current structure could change by the end of the year, adding that Italy would support any new framework adopted by the Lebanese government and the United Nations to maintain stability in the country.<\/p>\n
Italy’s 2026 deployment strategy also includes expanded security cooperation with Iraq through a new bilateral training and advisory mission, as well as preparations to participate in potential multinational operations to secure maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, reflecting Rome’s broader commitment to regional security.<\/p>\n
The positions adopted by both the European Union and Italy reflect a coordinated international effort to support Lebanon’s security institutions, facilitate a smooth transition beyond UNIFIL, and contribute to long-term stability in the Middle East through sustained diplomatic and security cooperation.<\/p>\n
