France has confirmed an aircraft carrier deployment to the Mediterranean as regional tensions escalate following US and Israeli attacks on Iran. The aircraft carrier deployment reflects Paris\u2019s attempt to reinforce air and maritime security in the eastern Mediterranean.<\/p>\n
President Emmanuel Macron said the move comes after Iranian-made drone strikes hit a British Royal Air Force base in Cyprus as the conflict expands across the region.<\/p>\n
France\u2019s flagship vessel, the Charles de Gaulle, was ordered to leave its North Atlantic mission and head toward the eastern Mediterranean. Macron said the ship, its Rafale aircraft and accompanying frigates began repositioning immediately after his directive.<\/p>\n
The Charles de Gaulle is expected to reach the region within ten days. Its 20 Rafale fighter jets and two Hawkeye surveillance planes will contribute to securing airspace over key maritime corridors.<\/p>\n
Macron emphasized the growing threat to global trade routes, noting that the Strait of Hormuz is effectively closed which threatens nearly one fifth of global oil and gas shipments.<\/p>\n
In his speech, Macron said the US and Israel launched operations outside international law although he placed the primary responsibility on Iran due to its nuclear activities, arming of regional groups and its domestic crackdown on protests.<\/p>\n
Macron confirmed that new air defence systems, Rafale jets and radar aircraft were deployed to Cyprus hours after drones struck the RAF base at Akrotiri. The French frigate Languedoc was also sent to the island\u2019s coast.<\/p>\n
French units have intercepted drones in \u201cself-defence\u201d since the conflict\u2019s early hours, according to Macron. In previous years, the Languedoc used Aster missiles to intercept drones fired by Yemen\u2019s Huthi movement in the Red Sea.<\/p>\n
France also maintains significant military presence in the UAE including 900 personnel, Rafale jets, tanks and artillery. Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot confirmed that a French hangar in the UAE was damaged by a drone strike.<\/p>\n
As the war expands, the United States arranged charter flights from Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE to help citizens leave the region. Over 9,000 Americans have departed since Saturday including more than 300 from Israel.<\/p>\n
The US State Department authorized non-emergency staff and families to leave Saudi Arabia, Oman and Cyprus due to security risks.
\nOman has called for a ceasefire while Saudi Arabia condemned Iranian strikes including a drone attack that shut down the US embassy in Riyadh.<\/p>\n
France\u2019s aircraft carrier deployment and expanded air defence measures demonstrate growing concerns among global powers as the conflict with Iran spreads across the Middle East.
