The escalation comes after the killing of Iran\u2019s supreme leader Ali Khamenei in joint US Israeli strikes that triggered retaliatory attacks across the Middle East.

Israel carried out extensive airstrikes targeting Hezbollah sites in Beirut and southern Lebanon after the group launched rockets and drones into Israel in what it described as retaliation for Khamenei\u2019s killing.
\nAFP correspondents reported heavy explosions in Beirut at dawn. Large numbers of civilians fled the southern suburbs and border regions with cars packed with families and belongings.
\nThe Israeli army said it targeted senior Hezbollah members in Beirut and the south. Lebanon\u2019s state-run National News Agency reported strikes across the country, particularly in areas where Hezbollah maintains influence.
\nIsrael also issued mass evacuation warnings, telling residents in about 50 towns in southern and eastern Lebanon to leave their homes and move at least one kilometer away.<\/p>\n
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Salam condemned the rocket fire into Israel as irresponsible, saying it placed Lebanon at risk and offered Israel a justification to continue its attacks.
\nPresident Joseph Aoun warned that operations from Lebanese territory could drag the country into a conflict unrelated to its national interests.
\nLebanese authorities reiterated that they do not seek involvement in the regional escalation and called for diplomatic efforts to prevent further deterioration.<\/p>\n
Inside Iran, US and Israeli strikes killed more than 200 people according to the Iranian Red Crescent, including senior officials such as Ali Shamkhani and General Mohammad Pakpour.
\nThe Pentagon said the operation targeted key Revolutionary Guard facilities. President Donald Trump stated that the United States could continue strikes for several weeks and vowed to avenge the deaths of three US service members.
\nIran responded by launching missiles and drones toward Israel and several Gulf states hosting American bases. Attacks were reported in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain, causing casualties. AFP correspondents reported explosions in Doha, Dubai and Manama.<\/p>\n
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Khamenei\u2019s killing amounted to a declaration of war on the Muslim world.
\nIran\u2019s leadership vowed retaliation, while the Revolutionary Guard claimed it targeted the USS Abraham Lincoln. The Pentagon denied any hits on the vessel.<\/p>\n
Hezbollah said its attack on Israel aimed to avenge Khamenei and defend Lebanon in response to repeated Israeli strikes. This marked the first major attack by the group since the November 2024 ceasefire that ended a year-long conflict.
\nHezbollah leader Naim Qassem pledged that the group would confront what it described as US Israeli aggression and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Iran.
\nThe group organized public mourning ceremonies for Khamenei across areas under its influence.<\/p>\n
