AFP journalists reported powerful explosions in Beirut at dawn, while Lebanon\u2019s National News Agency confirmed strikes in the capital\u2019s southern suburbs where Hezbollah maintains control.
\nLarge numbers of residents fled the area in cars packed with belongings. Similar scenes were observed in Sidon as families moved away from southern regions near the Israeli border.
\nIsrael said it targeted senior Hezbollah members in Beirut and the south. The military later issued evacuation warnings to residents in about 50 towns and villages in southern and eastern Lebanon.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Najib Salam condemned the rocket fire toward Israel as irresponsible, adding that it exposed Lebanon to further danger and provided Israel with justification for continued strikes.
\nHe affirmed that the government would take necessary steps to prevent Lebanon from being dragged into a war it does not seek.
\nPresident Joseph Aoun also warned that actions carried out from Lebanese territory could turn the country into a battlefield for external conflicts.<\/p>\n
Inside Iran, the joint US Israeli offensive killed more than 200 people according to the Iranian Red Crescent. Among the dead were senior figures including Ali Shamkhani and General Mohammad Pakpour of the Revolutionary Guards.
\nWashington said the strikes destroyed major Revolutionary Guard headquarters and indicated that military operations would continue. President Donald Trump said the US could maintain similar levels of attacks for weeks, citing ample military capabilities.
\nIran responded with missiles and drones fired at Israel and several Gulf states hosting US military bases. Explosions were heard in Doha, Dubai, and Manama according to AFP journalists.<\/p>\n
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called the killing of Khamenei a declaration of war against Muslims. He asserted that Iran views retaliation as a legitimate duty.
\nThe Revolutionary Guards said they targeted the USS Abraham Lincoln, although the Pentagon stated the missiles did not come close to the vessel.<\/p>\n
Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the rocket and drone attack on Israel, calling it retaliation for Khamenei\u2019s killing and defense of Lebanon. It was the group\u2019s first acknowledged attack since the November 2024 ceasefire that ended a year of fighting with Israel.
\nHezbollah chief Naim Qassem said the movement would confront what he described as American Israeli aggression and would not abandon the field.
