Nouri al Maliki candidacy for Iraq\u2019s premiership remains unchanged despite strong pressure from the United States. Maliki told AFP that he has no intention of withdrawing and stressed that the decision lies solely with Iraqis.
\nHis comments came as Washington threatened to halt all support if he returns to the post, raising concerns within Iraq\u2019s political blocs and the Coordination Framework that nominated him.<\/p>\n
Maliki said he would not step aside, describing the American position as interference in Iraq\u2019s internal affairs. He added that no foreign party has the right to dictate who Iraqis can vote for.
\nLast month President Donald Trump warned that naming Maliki as prime minister would end US cooperation with Baghdad.<\/p>\n
Iraq has long navigated complex relations between the US and Iran. Maliki, who served two terms from 2006 to 2014, denied that his previous ties with Washington were poor and said a working relationship with the United States is essential for Iraq\u2019s stability.
\nHe stressed that Iraq\u2019s relations with Iran are based on shared borders and interests and on respect for Iraq\u2019s sovereignty.<\/p>\n
Washington has demanded that Baghdad limit the influence of Iran backed groups and ensure that armed factions operate under state authority.
\nMaliki said American concerns are not new and align with Iraq\u2019s own goals including:
\n\u2022 Ensuring weapons remain under state control
\n\u2022 Building a unified and centralised military
\n\u2022 Integrating or disarming non state armed groups<\/p>\n
Maliki said dialogue with armed factions is possible provided that solutions avoid force or confrontation. He added that these groups do not wish to endanger Iraq and that those who lay down their arms can participate in the political process and government.<\/p>\n
regional tensions With US Iran tensions rising and new nuclear talks scheduled in Geneva, fears persist that Iraq could be dragged into confrontation.
\nMaliki pledged that if he becomes prime minister his government will prevent attacks on embassies and any internationally recognised diplomatic interests.
\nHe said no group will be allowed to target foreign missions inside Iraq.<\/p>\n
Maliki highlighted Iraq\u2019s dependence on Iranian natural gas to meet its energy needs. He warned that any interruption in supply would cause a major crisis for the country.<\/p>\n
Maliki\u2019s insistence on continuing his bid underscores ongoing tensions between Baghdad and Washington as Iraq attempts to maintain a balance between both powers while addressing internal political and security challenges.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
