The Popular Mobilization Forces on Monday launched a wide security operation in the Nineveh Desert from five axes, in coordination with Iraqi army units, to pursue ISIS remnants and reinforce security in the area.<\/p>\n
According to a statement by the Popular Mobilization Forces Commission, the operation is based on prior intelligence efforts and field reconnaissance aimed at tracking sleeper cells and preventing any hostile movements across the desert sector.<\/p>\n
The move comes as part of ongoing preemptive operations carried out by Iraqi security forces in cooperation with the Popular Mobilization Forces to prevent ISIS from reconstituting its networks in remote areas.<\/p>\n
The Commission stated that Nineveh Operations Command within the Popular Mobilization Forces initiated the operation along five main axes, with the participation of multiple PMF formations and direct support from the Iraqi army.<\/p>\n
The operation aims to:<\/p>\n
Cut off sources of terrorist activity in desert areas.
\nTrack and dismantle ISIS sleeper cells.
\nPrevent any hostile movements or attempts to reorganize.<\/p>\n
Field activities include wide search and clearance operations across open terrain, relying on precise intelligence to ensure accuracy and rapid execution.<\/p>\n
The following units are taking part in the operation:<\/p>\n
Brigades and departments of Nineveh Operations Command within the Popular Mobilization Forces.
\nWest Nineveh Operations units.
\nThe provincial information office.
\nIraqi army formations.<\/p>\n
The participating forces are receiving direct support from PMF directorates, including military engineering and medical units, along with logistical and technical teams.<\/p>\n
The Nineveh Desert has previously witnessed activity by ISIS cells, which have attempted to exploit vast and sparsely populated terrain to regroup. Iraqi security forces have conducted periodic clearance operations in these areas to prevent the group from rebuilding operational capabilities.<\/p>\n
Officials say the latest operation falls within a broader security plan coordinated among military and security agencies to consolidate stability and block any renewed militant presence within the area of responsibility.<\/p>\n
