Paul Thomas Anderson DGA Award recognition has placed the filmmaker firmly at the center of the 2026 awards season. The American director won the feature film prize at the Directors Guild of America Awards in Beverly Hills on Saturday, a result widely seen as a strong indicator for the upcoming Academy Awards.<\/p>\n
The honor strengthens the position of One Battle After Another as a leading Oscar contender, following a series of major awards wins earlier this year. The ceremony was held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles and hosted by comedian Kumail Nanjiani.<\/p>\n
Anderson received the DGA Award for feature film direction for One Battle After Another, a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The story follows a former revolutionary attempting to protect his teenage daughter as unresolved conflicts from his past resurface.<\/p>\n
The Directors Guild of America Awards are considered one of the most reliable predictors of Oscar success. Twenty of the last 22 DGA feature film winners have gone on to win the Academy Award for best director, including the winners of the past three years.<\/p>\n
Upon accepting the award, Anderson described the honor as a significant moment in his career and acknowledged the support of his peers in the industry. He also paid tribute to his longtime assistant director Adam Somner, who died in 2024.<\/p>\n
Anderson prevailed over a competitive field that included Ryan Coogler for Sinners, Guillermo del Toro for Frankenstein, Josh Safdie for Marty Supreme, and Chlo\u00e9 Zhao for Hamnet.<\/p>\n
One Battle After Another enters the Oscars as the second most nominated film of the year, with 13 nominations. It trails only Sinners, which received a record 16 nominations. Anderson himself is nominated in three Oscar categories this year, including best picture and adapted screenplay. Despite his reputation as one of the most influential directors of his generation, he has not yet won an Academy Award.<\/p>\n
The film has also received earlier recognition at the Critics\u2019 Choice Awards and the Golden Globe Awards, further reinforcing its status as a frontrunner.<\/p>\n
Ukrainian filmmaker and journalist Mstyslav Chernov won the DGA Award for documentary film for 2000 Meters to Andriivka. The film follows a Ukrainian platoon during an operation to retake a village under Russian occupation and documents the realities of the war.<\/p>\n
Chernov used his acceptance speech to highlight the difficult choice faced by journalists and civilians in conflict zones, emphasizing the human cost of war.<\/p>\n
