Former French culture minister Jack Lang has proposed stepping down from his position as president of the Arab World Institute in Paris, following revelations about past ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. According to a letter seen by AFP, Lang informed French Foreign Minister Jean-No\u00ebl Barrot that he would formally submit his resignation at an upcoming emergency meeting of the institute\u2019s board.<\/p>\n
The French foreign minister confirmed that he had taken note of Lang\u2019s proposal and announced the start of a process to appoint a successor to lead the Arab World Institute.<\/p>\n
Barrot said that within seven days he would convene the board of directors to appoint an interim president to ensure continuity and integrity in the institute\u2019s operations.<\/p>\n
The Arab World Institute receives roughly half of its annual budget from the French foreign ministry, amounting to about 12.3 million euros.<\/p>\n
France\u2019s National Financial Prosecutor\u2019s Office has opened a preliminary investigation into Jack Lang, 86, and his daughter Caroline over suspected aggravated tax fraud laundering. The probe relates to alleged financial links with the late American businessman Jeffrey Epstein.<\/p>\n
Lang has repeatedly stated that the allegations against him are unfounded and has said he is prepared to cooperate fully with investigators to establish the facts.<\/p>\n
His lawyer, Laurent Merlet, said Lang was deeply saddened to leave an institution he led for more than 13 years but would continue to defend his integrity and reputation.<\/p>\n
Calls for Lang\u2019s resignation intensified after the US Justice Department released millions of documents on January 30 related to Epstein. Lang\u2019s name appeared frequently in the disclosed files, alongside correspondence suggesting personal and financial contacts.<\/p>\n
Lang and his legal team deny the existence of any close friendship with Epstein, saying their contacts date back around 15 years and that Lang was unaware of Epstein\u2019s criminal history at the time.<\/p>\n
Founded in 1980, the Arab World Institute operates under private law and aims to promote cultural dialogue between France and the Arab world. Its president is formally appointed by a board made up equally of Arab ambassadors and figures designated by the French foreign ministry.<\/p>\n
Lang has headed the institute since 2013, with his mandate renewed several times, most recently for a three-year term starting in late 2023.<\/p>\n
