Iraq’s electoral commission reported a turnout of more than 55 percent — an unexpectedly high figure — in Tuesday’s general election.
The figure is based on the results in most of the polling stations, the commission said, adding that more than 12 million people voted out of over 21 million eligible voters.
The unexpected turnout is a sharp jump from the record low of 41 percent in 2021, despite this year’s vote being boycotted by influential Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr.
